The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is holding discussions over the appointment of a new Black Stars head coach following the expiry of Carlos Queiroz’s short-term contract.
GFA Executive Council member Gideon Fosu has confirmed that negotiations are ongoing, with the association expected to appoint a coach before Ghana return to competitive international football.
Queiroz’s four-month agreement came to an end after Ghana’s participation in the 2026 Fifa World Cup. The 73-year-old Portuguese coach had been appointed in April to lead the Black Stars at the tournament after Otto Addo was dismissed in March.
Efforts to extend Queiroz’s stay have reportedly broken down because of his financial demands, leaving Ghana searching for a permanent successor.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Fosu said the GFA was continuing discussions and assured supporters that a coach would be in charge when Ghana begin their next competitive assignments.
“I think whats there for Ghanaians to know is that well definitely play Senegal and we have to play the qualifiers, right? What I can say on authority is that we are definitely going to have a coach who is in charge of the team,” he said.
Fosu added that the process was still underway and that an official announcement would be made when the association was ready.
“We are still talking, we are still negotiating. I am sure that at the right time, the president of the FA will announce who the next coach of the Black Stars will be,” Fosu added.
The vacancy follows Ghana’s World Cup campaign under Queiroz, whose contract was specifically agreed on a short-term basis before the tournament.
The Portuguese coach was reported to have earned $80,000 a month during his time in charge of the national team.
Ghana are now approaching an important period in their international calendar, with the Black Stars expected to return to competitive action in September.
Their next assignment will be in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, meaning the GFA will need to settle the coaching situation before the qualifiers begin.
Ghana missed the previous edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and will be aiming to secure a place at the next tournament.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group C for the upcoming qualifying campaign alongside West African rivals Cote d’Ivoire, as well as The Gambia and Somalia.
The group will provide Ghana’s new coach with an immediate competitive challenge and little time to settle into the role.
Fosu’s comments indicate that the GFA is aware of the need to complete the appointment before the qualifiers, with the association continuing negotiations over its preferred candidate.
Although no new coach has been officially named, the GFA executive member has made clear that the Black Stars will not enter their next competitive fixtures without a coach in charge.
The identity of Queiroz’s successor remains undecided, with the GFA expected to make the announcement once negotiations have been concluded.
For Ghana, the appointment will be an important decision as the team prepares to begin a new international cycle after the World Cup.
The Black Stars will face Senegal as part of their upcoming international commitments, while their 2027 Afcon qualifying campaign will also require careful preparation.
The GFA’s immediate priority is therefore to complete the coaching process and provide the national team with leadership before competitive football resumes.
For now, talks remain ongoing, with Fosu confirming that the association is still negotiating and that the final decision will be announced by the FA president at the appropriate time.
