Ghana defender Gideon Mensah joins FC Köln on free transfer

Ghana international Gideon Mensah has completed a move to Bundesliga club FC Köln after successfully undergoing a medical and signing a long-term contract with the German side.

The 27-year-old left-back joins the club as a free agent following the expiry of his contract with French Ligue 2 team AJ Auxerre on 30 June 2026.

Mensah is expected to be officially announced by FC Köln shortly and will wear the No. 14 shirt after completing all the formalities surrounding his transfer.

The defender travelled to Cologne on Friday morning, where he underwent medical examinations before signing a contract that is reportedly set to keep him at the club until 2029.

His arrival comes after an impressive campaign with Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured in every minute of the Black Stars’ matches.

Mensah was among Ghana’s standout performers during the tournament, earning praise for his consistency on the left side of defence as well as his ability to contribute in attacking situations.

The defender’s performances on the international stage are understood to have strengthened FC Köln’s interest, with the Bundesliga club identifying him as a key target during the summer transfer window.

Köln have been searching for a dependable left-back since club legend Jonas Hector retired, and Mensah is expected to fill that role as the team looks to strengthen its defensive options.

The club hopes his experience at both club and international level will add stability to the back line following a mid-table finish last season.

Mensah brings extensive European experience to Germany after spells in Austria, Belgium, Portugal and France.

During his career, he has represented Red Bull Salzburg, Zulte Waregem, Vitória Guimarães, Sturm Graz, Bordeaux and Auxerre before making the move to the Bundesliga.

At international level, he has earned 44 caps for Ghana and has represented the Black Stars at both the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.

His latest transfer marks another significant step in a career that has seen him play across several of Europe’s top leagues.

Mensah becomes FC Köln’s second signing of the current summer transfer window.

The Bundesliga side had already strengthened its squad with the arrival of midfielder Eric Martel from RB Leipzig and is also reportedly monitoring Australian midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler and Mexican midfielder Edson Álvarez as it continues to reshape the squad.

The Ghanaian defender is expected to be officially unveiled by the club on Saturday.

FC Köln plan to introduce their new signing to supporters at the club’s training facility, where he is set to begin preparations for the new Bundesliga season.

For Mensah, the move offers an opportunity to continue his career in Germany’s top flight after leaving Auxerre at the end of his contract.

For FC Köln, his signing provides an experienced international defender who has recently demonstrated his qualities on one of football’s biggest stages and who is expected to play an important role as the club prepares for the upcoming campaign.
