Germany secured their first victory under new manager Jurgen Klopp with a 2-0 win over Serbia at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Thursday.
The result came in the third round of matches in League A of the Nations League, with Germany controlling much of the game and leaving Serbia with little threat in attack.
The hosts started strongly and created a series of early opportunities. Nick Woltemade came closest to opening the scoring but headed wide from close range.
Germany eventually made their pressure count in the 39th minute. Bayern Munich midfielder Tom Bischof reacted first after the ball rebounded off the post and finished to give the home side the lead.
The goal was Bischof’s first for Germany at senior international level.
Germany continued to dictate the contest after the interval and doubled their advantage in the 61st minute. Liverpool forward Florian Wirtz showed excellent control before calmly placing the ball into the net.
Serbia were unable to respond as Germany maintained their dominance for the remainder of the match. The visitors created little to trouble Bayern Munich goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, and Klopp’s side completed a comfortable 2-0 victory.
The result restores some balance to Germany’s campaign after they drew 1-1 away to the Netherlands before suffering a surprise 1-0 home defeat by Greece in their opening two Nations League matches.
Germany now have four points and sit third in the group. The Netherlands are second on five points, while Greece lead with seven. Serbia remain bottom without a point.
In the other match played on Thursday, the Netherlands fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 away to Greece.
