Stephan El Shaarawy will continue his career with Genoa after the Italian club confirmed the signing of the 33-year-old attacking midfielder as a free agent.
The move was announced by Genoa’s press office, bringing El Shaarawy to the club after his departure from Roma. The experienced Italian footballer left the capital side when his previous contract expired.
El Shaarawy’s arrival gives Genoa an established attacking option as they look to recover from a difficult start to the new Serie A season. The club have lost their opening two matches and currently sit 16th in the league table.
There was no transfer fee involved in the move because El Shaarawy was available as a free agent following the end of his Roma agreement. Genoa have now secured his services as they prepare for their next fixture, although the club announcement did not disclose the length or financial details of his new contract.
The 33-year-old spent his most recent period with Roma before becoming available at the conclusion of his deal. His move to Genoa marks the next stage of a career that has included a spell with the Rome-based club and has now taken him to another Italian side.
Genoa’s immediate focus will be on their home meeting with Como. The match is scheduled for Friday, 4 September, and will give the club an opportunity to claim their first points of the new campaign.
The Genoa side have begun the season with two consecutive defeats, leaving them in 16th place after the opening matches. El Shaarawy has joined at a time when the team are seeking a change in momentum, with their next league game set to take place at home.
The club’s confirmation makes the attacking midfielder their latest addition as they attempt to improve their position in Serie A. His experience will now be available to Genoa following the expiry of his Roma contract, while the team prepare for the visit of Como.
El Shaarawy’s signing was therefore completed without a transfer fee, with Genoa bringing in the Italian forward after his previous employment ended in Rome. The club’s next match on 4 September will be their first opportunity to put the new arrival’s signing into the wider context of their season, although Genoa currently remain 16th after suffering two defeats.
