Belgian Pro League club KRC Genk are nearing an agreement to sign Ghana forward Jerry Afriyie, with negotiations reportedly progressing over a permanent move for the highly-rated teenager.
The 19-year-old has attracted interest following an impressive loan spell in Belgium, where his performances helped strengthen his reputation as one of Ghana’s promising young forwards.
Afriyie recently returned to Saudi Arabian club Al Qadsiah, his parent club, after spending 10 months on loan in Belgium. However, his future there now appears uncertain, with Genk pushing to secure his services during the current transfer window.
The Belgian club are understood to be keen on bringing Afriyie back to the country on a permanent basis, despite the player having been involved in Al Qadsiah’s pre-season preparations.
Talks between Genk and the relevant parties are said to be advancing as the club attempts to complete the deal.
Afriyie’s previous spell in Belgium appears to have played a major role in attracting Genk’s interest.
During his 10-month loan period, the Ghana international made 31 appearances in all competitions and accumulated 2,497 minutes of competitive action.
He scored five goals and provided one assist, figures that underlined his increasing ability to compete at a high level while continuing his development.
Genk are known for their focus on developing young footballers and creating opportunities for emerging players to progress towards the highest levels of the game.
That reputation is understood to be an important factor behind the club’s interest in Afriyie, who is considered to have significant potential despite his age.
The forward has also attracted attention from clubs in England and Spain, but Genk have moved to the front of the race by pursuing a permanent transfer.
Afriyie’s involvement in Al Qadsiah’s pre-season has not prevented the Belgian side from attempting to complete the move. Instead, his situation at the Saudi club has become increasingly uncertain as Genk advance their negotiations.
A successful transfer would allow Afriyie to remain in a European football environment where he has already gained valuable experience.
For the Ghana international, a permanent move to Genk could represent another significant stage in his development. The club’s record of working with young players could provide him with an opportunity to continue improving while competing in a demanding European league.
Afriyie’s performances during his loan spell have also contributed to his growing profile outside Ghana.
The teenager’s emergence comes as a number of young Ghanaian players continue to attract attention from clubs beyond the country.
At only 19, Afriyie is regarded as a player who still has considerable scope for improvement. Genk’s reported willingness to invest in his long-term development could therefore give him the platform to build on the progress he made during his time in Belgium.
The potential move would also mark a continuation of Afriyie’s development away from Al Qadsiah, where his immediate future has become unclear despite his participation in the club’s pre-season programme.
Genk’s interest has intensified after a campaign in which Afriyie gained significant competitive experience and demonstrated his ability to contribute in European football.
With negotiations understood to be progressing, Genk are now looking to conclude an agreement that would bring the Ghanaian forward back to Belgium on a permanent basis.
If completed, the move would give Afriyie another opportunity to establish himself in European football and continue his development at a club with a reputation for nurturing young talent.
