Gabon’s Ekomié attracts Premier League interest after standout Angers season

Gabon international Jacques Ekomié is attracting growing attention from clubs across Europe, including several in the Premier League, following an impressive campaign with Angers in France’s top flight.

The 22-year-old left-back has emerged as one of the key figures in Angers’ season, helping the club edge closer to securing their Ligue 1 status with just three matches remaining.

Currently sitting 13th in the table with 34 points, the team has built its survival push on defensive stability, boasting the 10th-best defensive record in the league.

Ekomié has played a central role in that solidity. Featuring in 29 league matches, including 23 starts, the Gabonese defender has established himself as a regular presence on the left flank.

His consistency and defensive discipline have not only strengthened his club’s backline but also raised his profile ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Despite missing out on a deeper run at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he made three starts before Gabon exited in the group stage, Ekomié has continued to impress at club level.

His performances against some of Ligue 1’s top sides have particularly stood out.

In a recent match against Paris Saint-Germain, although Angers suffered a 3-0 defeat, the defender won five duels in the second leg, underlining his individual quality against elite opposition.

Such displays have not gone unnoticed.

According to reports, several clubs are closely monitoring his situation, with strong interest emerging from England.

Newly promoted Premier League side Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, are said to be among the admirers.

Nottingham Forest, currently battling to maintain their top-flight status, are also keeping tabs on the defender, alongside Fulham, who remain in contention for European qualification.

Interest is not limited to England.

Clubs in Germany’s Bundesliga are also reportedly tracking Ekomié’s progress.

Hamburg, who are aiming to secure their place in the division, and Augsburg, currently positioned ninth, are among those considering a move.

The former Bordeaux player remains under contract with Angers until June 2027, placing his club in a strong negotiating position should formal offers arrive.

In addition to foreign interest, another unnamed Ligue 1 club is also believed to have made a serious approach, highlighting the demand for his services within France.

For Ekomié, the attention represents a significant moment in his career.

Having developed into a reliable defender in Ligue 1, he now faces the prospect of a move to a higher-profile league or club, which could further elevate his standing both in Europe and within African football.

From an African perspective, his rise reflects the increasing influence of the continent’s talent pool in Europe’s major leagues.

With interest spanning multiple countries, the coming months could prove decisive in determining the next step for one of Gabon’s emerging stars.
