French-Malian midfielder Mahamé Siby has joined Singaporean club Hougang United, continuing his career in Asia after a short spell with Malaysia’s Selangor FC.
The 30-year-old has signed for Hougang United just a few months after moving to Selangor, where he made only three official appearances.
Siby’s move to Singapore represents another attempt to establish regular first-team football after a difficult period in Europe and limited playing opportunities in Malaysia.
Hougang United confirmed the arrival of the midfielder and said it hopes to benefit from the experience he gained during his career in Europe.
The player of Malian origin began his Asian journey after leaving Swedish club Malmö FF permanently in January.
Siby had joined Malmö in the summer of 2022 after departing French club RC Strasbourg, but his time in Sweden was disrupted by injuries.
The problems affected his progress at the Swedish club and eventually led to loan moves elsewhere in France.
He spent time on loan at Bastia before later joining Martigues, as he looked for opportunities to play regularly.
His situation at Malmö became particularly difficult in 2025, when he did not make a single appearance in the Allsvenskan.
After that period, Siby decided to leave Sweden and try to rebuild his career in Asia.
His first destination was Selangor FC in Malaysia, but the move did not immediately provide the regular football he was seeking.
The midfielder made just three official appearances for the Malaysian club before moving on again.
Only a few months later, Siby has now begun another chapter with Hougang United in Singapore.
The Singaporean club believes his previous experience can strengthen its squad, particularly in midfield.
Hougang United describes Siby as a player who can provide “quality and experience” to the team.
The club has also identified his physical strength in midfield and his ability to remain composed when in possession as qualities that could benefit the side.
For Siby, the move offers an opportunity to put the difficulties of recent seasons behind him and regain a more consistent role on the pitch.
At 30, the midfielder has already experienced football in several countries and leagues, including France, Sweden and Malaysia.
His career took him to Malmö after his time with Strasbourg, but injuries limited his opportunities in Sweden.
The subsequent loan spells at Bastia and Martigues provided further changes before he eventually left Malmö.
His decision to move to Asia was aimed at giving his career fresh momentum, although his limited involvement at Selangor meant another change was required.
Hougang United has now provided that next destination.
The club will be hoping Siby’s European experience and physical qualities can translate into a positive contribution in Singapore.
