Young Cameroonian midfielder Franck Atoen has completed a season-long loan move from Turkish Süper Lig side Samsunspor to French club USL Dunkerque, as the 19-year-old seeks regular first-team football to continue his development.
The move, which was confirmed by Dunkerque on the club’s official social media channels, will see the defensive midfielder spend the 2026-27 campaign in France after a year in Turkey, where he was beginning to make progress with Samsunspor’s senior squad.
For Cameroon, the transfer represents another example of one of the country’s emerging talents taking the next step in Europe, with Atoen hoping to establish himself in one of France’s competitive professional leagues.
Dunkerque announced that the midfielder would join the club on loan for the entire season from Samsunspor.
“USL Dunkerque announces the arrival of Franck Atoen, on loan for the 2026-2027 season, from Samsunspor,” the French club said.
Atoen joined the Turkish outfit in the summer of 2025 after leaving Amitié FC in Senegal, where he developed before making the move to European football.
Although still only 19 years old, he remains under contract with Samsunspor until June 2028, highlighting the Turkish club’s long-term belief in his potential.
During his first season in Turkey, Atoen earned opportunities to train and feature with the senior squad, including involvement in European competition.
While his appearances were limited to substitute roles, the experience exposed the young midfielder to football at a higher level and provided valuable lessons as he continues his development.
However, with regular playing opportunities proving difficult to secure in Samsunspor’s first team, both clubs have opted for a temporary move designed to accelerate his progress.
Dunkerque believe the Cameroonian has the qualities to strengthen their midfield despite his young age.
The French club described Atoen as a defensive midfielder capable of making an immediate contribution in front of the back line.
Standing at 1.76 metres tall, he operates primarily as a number six and is recognised for his intensity, work rate and ability to recover possession.
Club officials also highlighted his defensive qualities, noting that he arrives to reinforce the team’s midfield options ahead of the new campaign.
The loan presents Atoen with an opportunity to gain the consistent first-team football that is often considered crucial in the development of young African players adapting to European football.
For many emerging talents from the continent, loan moves provide an important bridge between academy football and becoming established professionals.
A successful spell in France could strengthen Atoen’s chances of returning to Samsunspor ready to compete for a regular place in the Turkish club’s first team.
It would also enhance his reputation as one of Cameroon’s promising young midfielders, with experience in two European leagues before the age of 20.
The move continues the growing trend of African footballers using France as a platform to develop their careers, with the country’s leagues providing opportunities for young players to gain valuable competitive experience.
For Dunkerque, signing Atoen adds youthful energy and defensive steel to the midfield as the club prepares for the 2026-27 season.
