France reach World Cup semi-finals after overcoming Morocco

France progressed to the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Morocco 2-0 in a closely contested and tactical quarter-final, although the victory was overshadowed by an injury to captain Kylian Mbappe.

Didier Deschamps’ side eventually found a way past Morocco’s disciplined defence to secure their place in the last four, ending the campaign of the Atlas Lions, who were the final African nation remaining in the tournament.

The quarter-final proved to be a tense encounter, with Morocco frustrating France for much of the opening half through a well-organised defensive performance that denied Les Bleus clear opportunities in front of goal.

France’s best chance before the interval arrived in the 28th minute when Kylian Mbappe won a penalty after being fouled by Mazraoui. However, the French captain was unable to convert from the spot as goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced an outstanding save to keep the scores level.

The penalty stop ensured the teams went into half-time locked at 0-0, with Morocco’s defensive resilience continuing to frustrate the tournament favourites.

France finally made the breakthrough after the restart as Mbappe produced the moment of quality his side had been searching for.

In the 60th minute, the forward curled a superb effort beyond Bounou to give France a deserved lead after sustained pressure against a Morocco side that had largely focused on containing its opponents.

Morocco attempted to regroup, but France quickly doubled their advantage. Six minutes after the opening goal, Ousmane Dembele finished a counterattack to make it 2-0 and put Deschamps’ side in firm control of the contest.

The second goal forced Morocco to abandon its cautious approach in search of a route back into the match. As the Atlas Lions committed more players forward, gaps began to appear at the back, allowing France to threaten repeatedly on the counterattack.

Bradley Barcola used the additional space to launch rapid attacks that further stretched the Moroccan defence and effectively ended any hopes of a comeback.

France held on comfortably to secure a place in the World Cup semi-finals following a performance that ultimately reflected their superiority after overcoming stubborn resistance from their opponents.

Despite the victory, France’s celebrations were tempered by concern over Mbappe’s fitness after the captain was forced to leave the pitch because of injury. His condition is now expected to become a major concern as the team prepares for its semi-final challenge.

For Morocco, the defeat brought an end to an impressive World Cup campaign. The Atlas Lions exited the competition as the last African side left in the tournament after once again demonstrating defensive discipline before eventually being undone by France’s attacking quality.

Although Morocco was unable to extend its run, the team’s journey ended only after reaching the quarter-finals and pushing one of the tournament’s strongest sides for long periods. France, meanwhile, moves on to the semi-finals with hopes of continuing its quest for World Cup success, while waiting for further updates on the fitness of its influential captain.
