Former Ghana head coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has backed the national team to make a strong impression at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but says their success will largely hinge on how they begin their group-stage campaign.
Akonnor, who is currently in charge of Kenyan side Gor Mahia, believes that taking maximum points from Ghana’s opening match will be crucial in shaping their fortunes in what he expects to be a highly competitive Group L at the tournament.
The 2026 edition of the competition, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with increased attention on the expanded format and the competitiveness it is expected to bring.
Ghana’s Black Stars have been drawn in a demanding group alongside Panama, England and 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia, a lineup that will test their consistency and resilience from the outset.
Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Akoma FM, Akonnor stressed that the opening fixture could define Ghana’s entire tournament trajectory. He believes an early win would not only secure valuable points but also inject confidence into the squad for the remaining group matches.
“Ghana winning the World Cup is possible, but the most important thing is for us to win our first game,” he said.
He explained that a positive start could help the team settle quickly into the competition and build momentum, which he considers essential in navigating a group of such quality opposition.
“Our first match is very important for a strong start, and the goal is to win it. Once we do that, knowing Ghana, we will build momentum and improve from there. But it is crucial we start well because after that, we will see things flying high.”
Akonnor also expressed firm belief in the current Ghana squad, insisting that his confidence is rooted in their ability to produce something special on the global stage. He said he sees enough quality within the team to suggest they can compete with the best sides in the world if they approach matches with belief and discipline.
“I have a lot of belief in this team, which is why I’m supporting them. I know they can achieve something special,” he stated.
The former Black Stars coach further highlighted Ghana’s growing experience at football’s biggest tournament, noting that the upcoming edition will mark their fifth appearance at the World Cup. In his view, this level of experience should now translate into greater composure and confidence, regardless of the calibre of opposition.
“Ghana has come a long way. This will be our fifth World Cup appearance. By now, we should be confident in what we are doing, regardless of the opponent we face,” Akonnor added.
Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on 17 June at BMO Field in Toronto, before facing England at Gillette Stadium on 23 June. They will conclude their group-stage fixtures against Croatia on 27 June.
Under head coach Carlos Queiroz, the Black Stars will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run in 2010, one of their most successful campaigns on the world stage.
