FIFA recognition sparks pride in Egyptian refereeing system

National governing body celebrates milestone achievement

Hani Abu Rida, president of the Egyptian Football Association, has led tributes to four Egyptian referees following their selection to officiate at the 2026 World Cup.

The governing body confirmed that the appointments of Amin Omar, Mahmoud Aboul-Regal, Ahmed Hossam Taha and Mahmoud Ashour represent a historic moment, marking the first time a complete Egyptian refereeing team will participate in the tournament.

In an official statement, the Egyptian FA extended congratulations on behalf of its leadership, board members, referees committee and staff, highlighting the significance of FIFA’s decision.

Recognition from FIFA seen as major endorsement

The selection, made by FIFA’s referees committee, is viewed as a vote of confidence in the quality and development of officiating standards in Egypt.

According to the association, the inclusion of a full Egyptian crew at the global event reflects sustained progress within the country’s refereeing system. It also underscores the growing international recognition of Egyptian officials at the highest level of the sport.

The statement emphasised that this milestone goes beyond individual achievement, describing it as evidence of structural improvement and investment in refereeing over recent years.

Pride and expectations ahead of global tournament

The Egyptian FA expressed optimism that the selected officials would perform successfully on the world stage, extending its best wishes for their participation in what is expected to be a landmark edition of the competition.

The 2026 World Cup is set to be the largest in history, featuring an expanded format and taking place across multiple host nations. The involvement of Egyptian referees in such a tournament is seen as both an honour and a responsibility.

In addition to celebrating the referees, the association also voiced support for the Egypt national football team, which is also set to compete in the tournament.

Development of refereeing highlighted

The FA’s statement placed particular emphasis on the evolution of refereeing in Egypt, suggesting that the appointments are the result of long-term efforts to raise standards and improve performance.

By achieving representation across all key officiating roles—main referee, assistant referees and video assistant referee—the country has reached a new level of recognition within international football governance.

A landmark moment for Egyptian football

The selection of a full Egyptian refereeing team for the 2026 World Cup stands as a defining moment for the country’s football community. As preparations continue for the global tournament, the focus will shift to performance on the field, where Egypt’s officials will aim to justify the confidence placed in them by FIFA and contribute to the success of one of football’s most prestigious events.
