FIFA’s official Spanish-language World Cup account has revisited one of the defining moments of the 2026 tournament: Argentina’s extraordinary recovery from two goals down to beat Egypt 3-2 in the last 16.
The account shared an image from the match on Friday, showing Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez heading the winning goal past Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. Egypt defender Yasser Ibrahim can be seen watching the decisive moment unfold.
The accompanying caption read: “From 0-2 to 3-2 in 13 minutes.”
The photograph brought back memories of a remarkable match between the two sides, played on 7 July at Atlanta Stadium in the United States.
Argentina, who were the holders at the time, appeared to be heading out of the competition after Egypt established a two-goal advantage. Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring for the Pharaohs in the 15th minute, before Mostafa Ziko doubled their lead in the 67th minute.
The score remained 2-0 until the 78th minute, leaving Argentina with little time to change the outcome of the last-16 tie.
However, the holders produced a dramatic late response, scoring three times in a 13-minute spell to complete one of the tournament’s most memorable comebacks.
Cristian Romero began the revival in the 79th minute when he reduced the deficit with a header. Argentina then drew level four minutes later, as Lionel Messi struck a powerful shot to make it 2-2.
With the match entering its second minute of added time, Enzo Fernandez completed the turnaround. The midfielder rose to head Argentina’s third goal past Mostafa Shobeir, securing a 3-2 victory for the South American side.
The result ended a match in which Egypt had been in control for most of the contest but were unable to preserve their advantage during the closing stages. Argentina’s three goals in the final minutes transformed the tie and sent the holders through after what had seemed an unlikely recovery.
FIFA’s decision to share the image once again places the focus on the brief period in which the match changed completely. Argentina had been two goals behind, but goals from Romero, Messi and Fernandez within 13 minutes turned defeat into victory.
