FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan over comments he made before and after the Pharaohs’ 2026 World Cup match against Argentina.
The case has been opened following the Argentina-Egypt fixture, with FIFA investigating whether a series of public statements by Hassan breached the organisation’s disciplinary regulations.
The allegations are detailed in an investigative report contained in the case file published through FIFA’s Legal Portal.
What is FIFA investigating?
Among the comments under review are Hassan’s public expressions of support for Palestine and his claims that Argentina received preferential treatment during the World Cup.
Hassan reportedly questioned whether Argentina benefited from the influence of captain Lionel Messi, commercial interests surrounding the tournament and the team’s status as reigning world champions.
FIFA is also examining Hassan’s allegations that Egypt was deliberately disadvantaged during the match and that external and internal factors influenced the outcome.
The former Egypt striker further claimed there was “no justice” during the tournament and questioned whether the match reflected FIFA’s principles of fair play and respect.
Verdict yet to be announced
The publication of the case file and investigative report means the matter has now entered FIFA’s formal disciplinary process.
However, no verdict has been announced, and FIFA has not indicated when the disciplinary committee will reach a decision.
If Hassan is found to have breached FIFA regulations, possible sanctions could include a warning, fine or suspension, depending on the nature and seriousness of the offence established.
Hassan remains in charge of Egypt while the proceedings continue.
The 59-year-old is one of the most prominent figures in Egyptian football and the country’s all-time leading men’s international goalscorer.
