FIFA investigates alleged racist abuse of IShowSpeed at World Cup

FIFA has opened an investigation into allegations of racist abuse directed at online streamer IShowSpeed during Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Cape Verde in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The governing body said it will review video footage and gather witness testimony as it examines reports of the incident, which allegedly took place in the stands during the knockout match.

According to eyewitness accounts, IShowSpeed was subjected to racist chants and insults while attending the fixture. Witnesses also alleged that one Argentina supporter made monkey gestures towards the American content creator.

The streamer has built a large global audience on social media and is widely recognised for his public support of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has long been regarded as the footballing rival of Lionel Messi.

FIFA confirmed that it is assessing the available evidence before deciding on any further action.

The organisation said it would analyse footage from the match and consider accounts from those who witnessed the alleged abuse.

The investigation follows reports that racist chants and insults were directed at IShowSpeed during Argentina’s 3-2 win over Cape Verde, with eyewitnesses also claiming that one supporter made monkey gestures towards him.

Should the allegations be substantiated, FIFA indicated that disciplinary measures could follow.

The governing body said sanctions could be imposed on the Argentine Football Association if the facts surrounding the reported incident are confirmed.

The announcement marks the beginning of FIFA’s formal review process, with investigators expected to determine whether the reported behaviour breached the organisation’s anti-racism regulations.

Argentina secured a 3-2 victory over Cape Verde to progress from the Round of 16, but attention has since shifted to the alleged incident involving the social media personality in the crowd.

FIFA has not announced a timeline for completing its investigation. The governing body said it will base its conclusions on its review of match footage and witness evidence before deciding whether any disciplinary action is warranted against the Argentine Football Association.
