Luis Enrique says Ferran Torres’ arrival has made Paris Saint-Germain a stronger side, with the Spain international joining from Barcelona in a deal worth about 50m euros.
Paris Saint-Germain officially announced the signing on Saturday morning, completing a move for the 65-cap Spain forward as the club continues to reshape its attacking options.
Torres has been on the French club’s radar for some time and joins as Paris Saint-Germain look to compensate for the departure of Gonzalo Ramos, who moved to Milan in July.
The 25-year-old made his first training appearance with his new team-mates on Saturday, although he is unlikely to be included in the squad for Sunday’s French Champions Trophy match against Lens.
Speaking at his pre-match news conference, Luis Enrique welcomed the transfer and said the club had acted quickly when the opportunity arose.
“I am happy with his arrival. I think we have become a better team, because we are always looking for available opportunities to strengthen the squad,” said the Paris Saint-Germain manager, as reported by Foot Mercato.
“He is an international player, and we know him very well. He also adapts perfectly because he can play in all positions. With his mentality, I think it is important to have this kind of player.”
Luis Enrique added: “We continue to work with the president and Luis Campos in the transfer market, and we are looking for ways to improve the team.”
Torres began his professional career with Valencia before moving to Manchester City and later joining Barcelona. His versatility means he can operate across the forward line, a quality Luis Enrique believes will be particularly valuable to the French champions.
Paris Saint-Germain are preparing to face Lens only a few days after winning the UEFA Super Cup, where they beat Aston Villa 2-1. The club are now aiming to add another trophy, but Luis Enrique declined to reveal the team he intends to select for Sunday’s match.
Asked whether he would make changes to the line-up, the Spanish manager responded with a joke.
“Will I make changes tomorrow? Do you want me to give the opponent some clues? I don’t know, I need to talk to my wife to find out who will play.”
Torres’ absence from the expected squad means his Paris Saint-Germain debut will probably have to wait, despite completing his first session with the team. His signing nonetheless gives Luis Enrique another established international to use as the club continues its work in the transfer market.
