Ferran Torres has withdrawn from Spain’s squad because of persistent pain in his left ankle, ruling him out of the team’s remaining two matches during the current international break.
The Spanish Football Federation confirmed that the Paris Saint-Germain forward was unable to continue with the national team after medical staff assessed his condition. Torres had initially been able to train and take part in team activities despite the injury, but his ongoing discomfort led to the decision to send him back to Paris.
Spain’s medical team had remained in regular contact with the doctors at Paris Saint-Germain since the start of the camp. The two medical departments monitored Torres’ condition together before agreeing that he should leave the squad and be given time to recover fully.
The injury means Torres will miss Spain’s match against Czech Republic tomorrow and the meeting with Croatia on 6 October. He will return to Paris to continue his treatment and rehabilitation programme.
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has responded by calling up Carlos Espi, who has represented Spain Under-21s, to join the senior squad. Espi will provide an additional attacking option ahead of the fixtures against Czech Republic and Croatia.
In a statement shared on social media, the Spanish Football Federation said: “Ferran Torres is ruled out of the @SEFutbol squad because of discomfort in his left ankle. Carlos Espi joins in his place.”
The blow comes at an important stage for Paris Saint-Germain, with Torres having made an impressive start to the season. He has scored seven goals in his first six matches, establishing himself as one of the club’s most influential attacking players.
Paris Saint-Germain will now wait to discover how quickly Torres can return to full fitness. The club hope the problem will not keep him out for an extended period and that he will be ready for the match against Le Mans on 10 October, which is scheduled to open the team’s French league campaign.
Torres’ departure also leaves Spain without one of its key attacking players for the final two games of the international window. The decision to withdraw him was taken despite his ability to continue training at the beginning of the camp, with the priority now on ensuring a complete recovery before he resumes club duties.
