Ferran Torres became only the third player in Paris Saint-Germain history to score two goals in his first official appearance for the club, rescuing them from a difficult match against Rennes.
Paris Saint-Germain appeared to be heading for defeat after falling 2-0 behind by half-time. However, Torres changed the course of the game after the interval, scoring twice to bring his side back into contention and spare them a damaging result.
The forward’s two-goal performance placed him alongside two notable names in the club’s history: Patrick Mboma and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Mboma was the first Paris Saint-Germain player to achieve the feat. He scored twice on his official debut for the club in 1994, doing so against Hungarian side Vac in a UEFA Champions League qualifying match.
Eighteen years later, Ibrahimovic matched that achievement. The Sweden international scored two goals in his first official game for Paris Saint-Germain in 2012, with his debut coming in a league fixture against Lorient.
Torres has now joined them after producing the same return in his opening competitive appearance.
His contribution was particularly significant because Paris Saint-Germain had been in serious trouble during the first half against Rennes. Trailing by two goals, they needed a response after the break, and Torres provided it with both of the goals that allowed the team to avoid defeat.
The result means Torres’ first competitive outing for the club will be remembered not only for his individual performance but also for the way he helped overturn a losing position. His double places him in a small group of Paris Saint-Germain players whose official debuts have included two goals.
Mboma’s achievement came during a Champions League qualification campaign, while Ibrahimovic reached the landmark in a league match against Lorient. Torres’ double against Rennes completes the latest entry in the club’s record of debut performances.
Although Paris Saint-Germain had struggled to impose themselves before half-time, Torres’ second-half display gave the team the breakthrough it needed. By scoring twice in the same match, he became the third player to mark an official debut for the club with a double.
The achievement links Torres with two earlier Paris Saint-Germain forwards across different periods of the club’s history. Mboma set the original benchmark in 1994, Ibrahimovic repeated it in 2012, and Torres has now become the latest player to do so.
For Paris Saint-Germain, the two goals also ensured that a match which looked to be slipping away after the opening 45 minutes ended without defeat. For Torres, it was an immediate place in the club’s record books.
