FC Barcelona consider renewed January move for Julian Alvarez

FC Barcelona are preparing to make another attempt to sign Atletico de Madrid forward Julian Alvarez when the winter transfer window opens in January, according to reports.

The Argentina international is expected to be the Catalan club’s leading target at the start of the new year, after FC Barcelona failed to complete a deal for him during the summer window.

Alvarez was keen on making the move last summer and actively pushed for a transfer, but FC Barcelona were ultimately unable to reach an agreement to bring him to the club. The reported interest has not diminished, however, with the Spanish side now considering a fresh approach several months later.

Transfer News Live, citing Sport, says the 26-year-old is likely to be prioritised by FC Barcelona as they assess their options in the January market. The report suggests the club remain interested in adding Alvarez to their attack and could renew their efforts once transfers become possible again.

Any potential deal would be financially significant. Transfermarkt currently values Alvarez at 120m euros, while his contract with Atletico de Madrid runs until 2030.

That long-term agreement gives Atletico de Madrid a strong position in any negotiations, particularly given Alvarez’s status as one of the club’s leading attacking players. FC Barcelona’s interest, therefore, could depend on whether the two clubs are able to find acceptable terms during the winter window.

For now, the proposed move remains at the stage of reported interest. FC Barcelona did not manage to secure Alvarez’s signature in the previous transfer period, despite the player’s desire to join them, and the latest claims point to an intention to revisit the possibility in January.

Alvarez is consequently being viewed as the central name in FC Barcelona’s plans for the opening of the new year’s transfer market. The club’s pursuit could become one of the major storylines of the winter window if it develops beyond the reported interest.

The forward’s contract situation and reported 120m-euro valuation will be key factors in determining whether a transfer can take place. With his Atletico de Madrid deal extending to 2030, FC Barcelona would face a substantial challenge in trying to persuade the club to part with him.

No agreement has been announced, but the latest reports indicate that FC Barcelona are ready to return to the subject after their unsuccessful attempt to sign Alvarez last summer.
