Fatawu prioritises Leicester survival after points deduction setback

Abdul Fatawu Issahaku has said his focus remains firmly on helping Leicester City avoid relegation, despite his recent individual success in the Championship.

The Ghana international winger was recently named winner of the Sky Bet Championship Goal of the Month award for February, but has downplayed the significance of personal recognition as the club battles to retain its league status.

Leicester’s situation has been made more difficult by a six-point deduction for breaching financial regulations, leaving them second from bottom in the table with just eight matches remaining in the season. The penalty has intensified pressure on the squad as they seek to climb out of the relegation zone.

Fatawu, who has been one of Leicester’s standout performers during a challenging campaign, emphasised that individual achievements hold little value without positive team results.

“I always try to score and give assists, so it is nice when your hard work pays off,” he said. “Everything we do on the pitch is to win, so we need to do better and keep working hard between now and the end of the season to make sure we stay in this league.”

The 22-year-old has made a significant contribution this season, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists in 37 appearances. His performances have offered a consistent attacking threat for Leicester, even as the team has struggled for results.

His award-winning goal against Birmingham City, a long-range strike, highlighted his ability to influence matches and produce moments of quality. However, such individual brilliance has not been enough to lift the club out of danger.

Leicester now face a critical run of fixtures as they attempt to secure enough points to avoid relegation. With the margin for error reduced following the points deduction, each match will be vital in determining their fate.

Fatawu’s comments underline a collective mindset within the squad as they enter the final phase of the season. While personal accolades may reflect individual form, the winger has made clear that the primary objective remains survival.

As the campaign approaches its conclusion, Leicester will be relying on players like Fatawu to continue delivering decisive contributions, with the club’s Championship status hanging in the balance.
