The opening day of the 2026 World Cup was overshadowed by tragedy after a man died following a medical emergency outside the stadium shortly before kickoff.
The man, believed to be between 45 and 50 years old, collapsed near Gate 11 of Estadio Azteca just minutes before the tournament’s opening match was due to begin.
Emergency medical personnel responded immediately and carried out resuscitation efforts at the scene as crowds gathered around the entrance area.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, the man could not be saved. He was pronounced dead after suffering a cardiac arrest while being transferred to an ambulance, according to preliminary information from local authorities.
The incident occurred as thousands of supporters were making their way into the stadium for the opening fixture of football’s biggest tournament, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Witnesses reported seeing medical teams rush to the scene and create a cordon around the supporter as they worked to revive him. Access around the gate was briefly restricted while emergency services attended to the situation.
