Cesc Fabregas says Como must focus on improving their performances rather than points, despite moving into contention after a 3-1 away win against Torino.
Asked by Sky Sport Italia whether Como could challenge for the title, Fabregas said the club’s priority was adapting to their first Champions League campaign and managing the demands of a congested schedule.
“This year is the first time in our club’s history that we’re playing in the Champions League, not the Conference League or Europa League,” he said.
“In those competitions, you can rotate more freely. In the Champions League, one mistake and you could lose 0-5 or 0-6 – that’s the level we’re at. We must find the best approach for every match.”
Como’s progress has been measured through their points totals in recent seasons. They collected 18 points in the first half of the season and 31 in the second half two years ago, before improving to 33 and 38 respectively last season.
They now have four more points than they did at the same stage last season, prompting the question of whether continued improvement could make them genuine title contenders.
Fabregas said the club’s Champions League commitments had made squad management particularly important. Como faced Sassuolo only 66 hours after playing Manchester United, meaning the matches were less than three full days apart.
“We played Sassuolo just 66 hours after Manchester United, not even three full days apart,” he said. “Rotation is essential; it’s impossible to maintain both tactical stability and squad consistency.”
The Como manager also revealed that the team currently have six injured players and said he was not concentrating on their points tally at this stage of the campaign.
“We already have six injured players, and honestly, I don’t focus on how many points we have,” Fabregas added. “Points aren’t what matters right now – it’s only October. I’m more concerned with performance, with seeing how the team plays and continuously raising our level.”
“This is a growth process, and we must stay the course.”
