Senegal fans are gearing up for a spectacular show of support as their national team prepares to face Peru in a friendly at the Stade de France on Saturday, 28 March 2026.
The excitement surrounding the match has prompted organisers to increase the stadium’s capacity from 50,000 to 60,000 spectators, in response to overwhelming demand, according to Sport News Africa.
The enthusiasm comes despite the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruling that Senegal forfeited the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final to Morocco.
Many supporters remain undeterred, determined to celebrate what they consider a hard-earned title, with the team still being regarded as champions by its fanbase.
In a symbolic gesture, the AFCON trophy will be unveiled at the Stade de France during the event.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has also planned a pre-match concert featuring stars such as Youssou N’Dour and Booba, ensuring the occasion will be both festive and memorable.
“The AFCON trophy presentation at the Stade de France is our way of sharing this achievement with fans,” said a spokesperson for the FSF. “We are grateful for their unwavering support, especially in the wake of recent developments.”
Senegal’s continued presence on the global stage comes as the FSF officially lodged an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following CAF’s controversial decision.
Morocco had initially appealed to CAF, citing Senegal’s 17-minute walk-off during the final, despite extra-time goals from Pape Gueye that had appeared to secure victory. CAF subsequently awarded Morocco a 3-0 win, sparking widespread debate.
CAS confirmed receipt of Senegal’s appeal on 25 March 2026. A panel of independent arbitrators will be appointed to review the case.
Under CAS rules, the Senegalese Football Federation has 20 days to submit a detailed appeal brief, after which the respondents are allowed another 20 days to provide their statement of defence.
Matthieu Reeb, CAS Director General, said: “CAS is perfectly equipped to resolve this type of dispute, with the assistance of expert and independent arbitrators.
“We understand that teams and fans are eager to know the final decision, and we will ensure that arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible, while respecting the right of all parties to a fair hearing.”
The Senegal vs Peru friendly has now taken on added significance, blending celebration with protest. For fans, the match is both a sporting spectacle and a statement of support for a team still seen as the rightful AFCON champions.
