Essien urges Ghana to stay focused ahead of World Cup group

Former Ghana international Michael Essien has called on the national team to remain focused and disciplined as they prepare for a challenging group stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana, set to make their fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament, have been drawn in a demanding Group L alongside the England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team.

Speaking in an interview with FIFA, Essien acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing the Black Stars but insisted that success will depend on maintaining focus and approaching each fixture individually.

“That’s a tough group. But there are always tough games to play, and it’s up to you to win them,” Essien said.

The former Chelsea FC midfielder, who won the UEFA Champions League in 2012, emphasised that tournament football often produces unpredictable outcomes, and Ghana must remain consistent throughout their campaign.

“They should take every game as it comes and do their best. It’s a tournament — anything can happen. You just have to make sure you win your games and keep moving,” he added.

Ghana will begin their World Cup journey against Panama on 17 June. The team will then face one of the tournament favourites, England, on 23 June before concluding their group stage fixtures against Croatia on 27 June.

The draw has presented Ghana with a mix of styles and experience, with England widely regarded as one of Europe’s strongest sides, while Croatia have established themselves as consistent performers on the global stage in recent years. Panama, meanwhile, will be aiming to make an impact as underdogs in the group.

Essien’s comments underline the importance of preparation and mental resilience as Ghana look to progress beyond the group stage. Having previously reached the quarter-finals in 2010, the Black Stars will be hoping to replicate or surpass that achievement in 2026.

While expectations remain measured, Essien’s message is clear: maintaining concentration and taking each match step by step could prove crucial in navigating one of the tournament’s more competitive groups.

With the countdown to the World Cup underway, attention will now turn to how Ghana prepare for their opening encounter, knowing that early results could shape their chances of advancing to the knockout rounds.
