Ernst Middendorp hits out at Hugo Broos over Pitso Mosimane comments

Former Cape Town Spurs head coach Ernst Middendorp has accused Hugo Broos of undermining Pitso Mosimane after the Belgian questioned whether his fellow former Bafana Bafana coach should succeed him.

Broos’ reported comments to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad have sparked reaction in South Africa, particularly after he suggested that the national team could go five years backwards if Mosimane returns as head coach.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) announced several weeks ago that it had reached an agreement with Mosimane over his return to Bafana Bafana. However, the two sides are still discussing personal terms before the appointment can be completed.

Broos raises concerns over Mosimane return

Broos, who previously coached Cameroon before taking charge of Bafana Bafana, reportedly expressed doubts about Mosimane becoming his successor.

The Belgian also spoke about the influence of agents around the national-team position, claiming that he had refused to deal with agents who approached him during his tenure.

Middendorp, however, believes Broos crossed the line by connecting those concerns directly to Mosimane.

Writing on LinkedIn, the German coach argued that highlighting problems within the football system was different from publicly questioning the credentials of a potential successor.

Middendorp defends Mosimane

Middendorp said Broos’ comments risk creating unnecessary pressure on Mosimane before he has even taken charge.

The German believes a new coach should be allowed to make his first squad selection, conduct his first training session and manage his first match without having to deal with a narrative that his appointment would damage the national team.

Middendorp nevertheless acknowledged Broos’ achievements with Bafana Bafana and said the Belgian deserved respect for what he accomplished.

However, he argued that leaving successfully also means recognising when responsibility for the national team has passed to someone else.

Mosimane awaits final agreement

Mosimane previously managed Bafana Bafana before going on to enjoy significant success at club level with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly.

His potential return comes as South Africa prepares for a change in leadership of the national team.

Although SAFA and Mosimane have reportedly reached an agreement in principle, the final personal terms remain to be settled.

Broos’ reported comments have consequently intensified the debate surrounding the transition, while Middendorp maintains that concerns about agents and football administration should not be used to undermine the credentials of the coach who could soon occupy Broos’ former position.
