The teams have played each other seven times in total, including matches in qualifying and at the final tournament. Sierra Leone hold the better overall record, having won four of those meetings, while Equatorial Guinea have two victories and one match has ended in a draw.
Their most recent contest came at the Africa Cup of Nations 2021. With qualification for the last 16 at stake, Equatorial Guinea secured the victory, giving the Nzalang Nacional a recent success to draw encouragement from ahead of Monday’s match.
The earlier meetings included two-legged ties in qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations 2004 and the World Cups in 2010 and 2014.
