El Nahhas: I would face Al Ahly with no compromise

Psychological Approach Behind Title Success

Former interim coach Emad El Nahhas has outlined the key factors behind Al Ahly SC’s Egyptian Premier League triumph last season, emphasising the decisive role of mental preparation during the closing stages of the campaign.

El Nahhas, who briefly took charge following the departure of Marcel Koller, guided the club through a crucial period, ultimately securing the title. Speaking during a televised appearance, he explained that his focus was on ensuring players were psychologically ready for the decisive fixtures.

He said he worked intensively with the squad ahead of six key matches, using tailored motivational tools to sharpen their mindset and maintain focus on a single objective: “There is no alternative to winning all six matches.”

Collective Responsibility and Leadership in the Squad

El Nahhas stressed that success was not solely the result of tactical planning but also stemmed from the players’ own determination. He highlighted the importance of individual accountability within the team.

According to him, “the player is the one who helps himself first,” underlining the significance of personal drive and discipline on the pitch.

He also pointed to the dressing room environment as a critical component, noting the influence of senior figures such as Amr El Solia, who helped maintain order and focus during a high-pressure phase of the season.

Motivating Key Players and Tactical Views

El Nahhas revealed that he held direct discussions with Palestinian forward Wissam Abu Ali, encouraging him to elevate his performance standards.

He said he urged the player to deliver at a higher level, effectively challenging him to adopt a more ambitious approach despite his domestic registration status.

Beyond individual motivation, El Nahhas also shared his views on current tactical decisions at Al Ahly. He suggested that clarity in the goalkeeping position would be essential, advocating for a fixed first-choice option rather than rotation between Mohamed El Shenawy and Mostafa Shobeir.

He expressed concern that rotation in such a critical role could affect consistency, particularly during decisive stages of the season.

Criticism of Recent Performances

The former coach did not shy away from criticising the team’s display against Espérance de Tunis, suggesting that the side lacked the necessary “spirit and focus.”

He argued that responsibility for such performances extends beyond the coaching staff, placing emphasis on the role of experienced players in maintaining standards during high-stakes matches.

Future Possibilities and Al Masry Link

Looking ahead, El Nahhas acknowledged the possibility of taking charge of Al Masry SC, describing the club as one with significant stature.

However, he made it clear that professional commitment would remain paramount. If appointed and faced with a match against Al Ahly, he would approach it with full competitive intent, regardless of its implications.

Focus Remains on Performance and Professionalism

As Al Ahly prepare for their next fixture against Ceramica Cleopatra in the league’s title phase, El Nahhas’s reflections offer insight into the mindset required to succeed at the highest level.

His emphasis on psychological readiness, leadership within the squad, and clear tactical decisions underscores the complexity of managing elite football teams.

Whether or not he takes up a new role in the near future, his comments suggest a coach firmly committed to maintaining competitive integrity—regardless of the opponent or occasion.
