Egyptian FA insists dispute with Al Ahly has been resolved

A senior official at the Egyptian Football Association has said relations with Al Ahly SC have returned to normal following a recent dispute, while also confirming plans for a pre-World Cup friendly match on home soil.

Mustafa Abu Zahra, a member of the association’s board, stated that tensions which emerged during the current league season have now been resolved. The disagreement had followed controversy linked to a match involving Ceramica Cleopatra FC, prompting debate over administrative decisions and match-day arrangements.

Crisis Sparked by Referees’ Meeting Disruption

The issue escalated after a hearing could not be held at the federation’s headquarters, leading to interactions between Al Ahly representatives and match officials. The incident occurred during the opening round of the championship stage of the domestic league, raising concerns about coordination and timing.

Abu Zahra rejected claims that a referees’ honouring event had been deliberately scheduled at a sensitive moment. He explained that the ceremony had already been postponed once and could not be delayed further due to logistical constraints.

According to him, referees had travel commitments from various regions and were also assigned to officiate upcoming fixtures, making it impractical to reschedule again.

FA Defends Its Handling of the Situation

The official said the federation acted promptly to address concerns surrounding the event, stressing that the intention was not to provoke controversy.

He emphasised that the purpose of the gathering was solely to recognise referees, while also reaffirming respect for Al Ahly supporters.

Speaking about the broader relationship, Abu Zahra said: “things are calmer now, and everyone is working within one framework, and there are no disputes as is rumored.”

He added that governance structures remain in place to ensure fairness across Egyptian football, stating: “No party’s rights can be violated in light of the existence of a clear regulatory and judicial system.”

Focus Shifts to World Cup Preparations

Away from domestic tensions, the federation is turning its attention to preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Abu Zahra revealed that efforts are underway to organise a high-profile friendly match in Egypt, expected to take place at the New Administrative Capital Stadium. The fixture is intended to serve as a key part of the national team’s build-up to the tournament.

He indicated that discussions are ongoing with potential opponents and that an agreement could be finalised within a week.

Planned Event to Support National Team

In addition to the match, the federation is considering a broader event to rally support for the national side. The initiative is expected to involve leading figures from Egyptian football, including former coach Hassan Shehata.

The move reflects an effort to unify stakeholders and generate momentum ahead of the global competition.

For now, the FA appears keen to project stability after recent disagreements, while shifting focus towards strengthening the national team’s preparations on the international stage.
