The Egyptian Football Association has strongly condemned racist and offensive behaviour displayed by a section of supporters during a friendly match between Egypt and Spain in Barcelona, describing the incidents as “shameful” and calling for collective action to eliminate such conduct from football.
In an official statement released after the match, which was held at Espanyol’s RCDE Stadium, the federation criticised what it described as unacceptable scenes that undermined the spirit of the game. The encounter, intended as a showcase of sporting unity, was instead overshadowed by controversy following reports of discriminatory chants and a lack of respect for Egypt’s national anthem.
Boos and Offensive Chants Spark Outrage
According to the statement, the disturbances began even before kick-off, when some spectators in the stands booed during the playing of Egypt’s national anthem. The behaviour was widely viewed as disrespectful and set the tone for further incidents during the match.
The situation escalated during the first half when a group of fans allegedly chanted racist and anti-Islamic slogans. Among the chants reported was an offensive phrase targeting Muslims, which was heard by thousands inside the stadium and broadcast to a global television audience.
The Egyptian FA said such behaviour represented a serious violation of sporting values and warned that incidents of this nature risk damaging the international reputation of football, particularly as Spain prepares to play a role in hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Federation Calls for Firm Action
In its response, the Egyptian Football Association expressed its “complete rejection” of the actions, stating that racism and disrespect have no place in football stadiums. The statement emphasised that such conduct is a negative phenomenon that must be addressed collectively by governing bodies, institutions, and supporters worldwide.
The federation also acknowledged and welcomed the swift condemnation issued by Spanish authorities, including the national football federation, the Ministry of Sports, and several prominent figures within Spanish football, all of whom denounced the incidents.
International Cooperation Highlighted
The statement further revealed that the association’s president, Engineer Hani Abu Rida, is engaging with FIFA officials and international partners to help prevent similar occurrences in the future. The federation stressed that coordinated global efforts are essential to ensure that football remains an inclusive and respectful environment for all.
Despite the controversy, the Egyptian FA was keen to underline that the actions of a minority of fans would not damage the strong relationship between the Egyptian and Spanish football communities. It praised the warm reception given to Egypt’s delegation in Barcelona, noting that the team had been provided with full support and hospitality throughout their visit.
