DR Congo players want Superfan Lumumba in World Cup delegation

DR Congo’s long-awaited return to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is being shaped not only by results on the pitch, but also by a powerful symbol off it as the squad rallies behind super fan Michel Nkuka Mboladinga.

The Leopards sealed their place at the tournament with a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff final on March 31, ending a 52-year absence from the global stage. Their only previous appearance came in 1974, when the nation competed as Zaire.

But as the celebrations settled, attention quickly turned to a unique appeal from within the squad, a call for Lumumba Vea to be included in the official World Cup delegation.

Known for his striking matchday ritual, Lumumba Vea has become a viral symbol of support, standing motionless in a blue suit throughout matches in imitation of Patrice Lumumba. His presence rose to prominence during the Africa Cup of Nations in 2025 and has since become closely associated with the team’s identity.

His dedication reached another level during the playoff window. Denied a visa to travel for the decisive clash in Mexico, he remained in Kinshasa, holding a 120-minute vigil in solidarity as the team fought for qualification abroad.

For the players, that moment appears to have deepened the connection. Their appeal to the country’s leadership reflects a desire to carry that spirit with them to the World Cup.

On the pitch, DR Congo’s journey has been equally compelling. They battled through a demanding CAF qualifying campaign, including a dramatic victory over Nigeria to reach the intercontinental playoffs. From there, they held their nerve against Jamaica to complete a historic return.

Now drawn in Group K alongside Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan, the Leopards face a challenging path at the tournament.

Yet beyond the fixtures and results, the story of Lumumba Vea adds a deeper layer to DR Congo’s campaign, one rooted in identity, resilience and national pride.

As they prepare for their return to the world stage, the Leopards are not just carrying their ambitions, but also the spirit of a fan who has come to represent far more than football.
