Rio Mavuba, the son of former Zaire international Mavuba Mafuila, has returned to Lille nine years after leaving the French club – this time with responsibility for developing its next generation of players.
The former Lille captain was officially appointed Sporting Director and Talent Manager of the club’s academy on Tuesday, marking a new chapter in his long association with Les Dogues.
Mavuba, 42, was one of Lille’s most recognisable players during his career and captained the club before leaving in 2017.
He will now work away from the pitch, using his experience to help shape the development of the club’s young players.
His return also carries a strong African football connection.
Mavuba’s father, Mavuba Mafuila, represented Zaire at the 1974 World Cup, while his mother was Angolan.
The former Lille midfielder was born aboard a boat in international waters during the Angolan Civil War and has previously said his birth certificate listed his place of birth simply as “born at sea”.
That unusual beginning was followed by a football career that took him to the highest levels of the European game.
Mavuba eventually became one of the key figures at Lille, wearing the captain’s armband and establishing himself as a leader within the dressing room.
He left the club in 2017, but his connection with Lille has now been renewed in an important off-field position.
The club said his responsibilities will include overseeing the sporting development of the academy, working alongside its various coaching staffs and maintaining links with the professional team.
For Mavuba, the role provides an opportunity to pass on the experience accumulated during his playing and coaching career to young footballers attempting to break into professional football.
Lille president Olivier Létang welcomed the appointment and highlighted the qualities he believes Mavuba can bring to the project.
“Rio embodies the values of hard work, courage, and excellence that we wish to instill in our young players. His experience as a coach and post-coach also makes him the ideal person to lead this project and guide our young talents to the highest level, with high standards and a deep understanding of modern football and the Club.”
Mavuba’s return is part of a wider change within Lille’s academy structure.
The club has also appointed Julien Meilhac as director of its training centre. The 42-year-old, who is from Dijon, brings extensive experience in French youth development.
Meilhac holds a BEFF coaching qualification and a UEFA A Licence and has worked with Dijon FCO, FC Lorient and ESTAC Troyes.
