Donyell Malen has been named Serie A Player of the Month for August and September after scoring six goals in his first five league appearances for Roma during the opening weeks of the 2026-27 campaign.
Malen is the first player to receive the award this season. Only five Serie A fixtures were played before the extra-long, ongoing international break, meaning the opening monthly prize covers both August and September.
The Netherlands international has helped Roma move to the top of the table, with the Giallorossi recording four wins and one draw from their opening five matches. Their only dropped points came against reigning champions Inter at the start of the season.
Malen made an immediate impact on the opening weekend, scoring a hat-trick against Fiorentina. He followed that with two goals against Lecce the next weekend before finding the net again in Roma’s 2-0 away victory over Torino in mid-September.
His strong start follows an impressive second half of the previous season. Malen scored 14 goals in 18 appearances during 2025-26 and finished second in the league’s goalscoring standings, despite joining Roma from Aston Villa only in January.
The 2026-27 award was contested by Malen, Lazio’s Davide Frattesi, Frosinone’s Giorgi Kvernadze, Cagliari’s Daniel Maldini, Inter’s Lautaro Martinez and Milan’s Adrien Rabiot.
Malen will receive the trophy before Roma’s first home Serie A fixture after the international break. That match will be against Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico on October 17.
Serie A chief executive Luigi De Siervo said Malen had maintained the scoring form he displayed after arriving in Italy.
“Donyell Malen has confirmed the extraordinary goalscoring numbers he’s shown since he arrived in Serie A last January,” said De Siervo.
“His six goals in five games immediately lit up the race for the top scorer title. His technical ability, speed and flair in front of goal make Malen one of the best strikers around. A goal machine perfectly integrated in Gasperini’s Roma chessboard.”
