Paolo Di Canio says Juventus are without an identity or “soul” after their 2-0 defeat by Genoa left them with a second loss in their past three Serie A matches.
The Bianconeri were beaten away from home on Wednesday and failed to score for the second time in three games. They have now scored only 11 goals in the opening nine league fixtures – the second-lowest total among the teams in Serie A’s top 10.
Juventus are already 11 points behind the league leaders, Lazio and Inter.
“It’s how they are getting these results. There’s no identity, no soul, in this team,” former Italy striker Di Canio told Sky Sport Italia.
“You can change systems. You might beat some teams, like Lecce; some teams in Italy aren’t that strong. They might look pretty, but they don’t bite in front of goal.”
Genoa took control with two first-half goals from Kingsley Ehizibue and Tommaso Baldanzi, while Juventus failed to respond.
Di Canio also criticised the defensive errors made by Juventus, including a mistake from Kalulu, a player he said had previously been dependable.
“There’s no soul. You don’t see the light. You see 10 minutes, 15 minutes. But then you see players like Kalulu, who, in terms of reliability, were always there, always doing the right things, make these types of mistakes,” he said.
“It’s really chaos. I don’t understand how they can find a solution.”
Juventus’ next fixture is a home match against Napoli at the Allianz Stadium in Turin.
Napoli are managed by Massimiliano Allegri, Juventus’ former coach, although he will be suspended for next Sunday’s game. The Partenopei moved to 14 points from nine Serie A matches after beating Monza 4-1 away in the midweek round.
Juventus also have 14 points from their opening nine matches. Napoli have scored 17 goals, six more than the Bianconeri, but have conceded 11 – one more than Juventus’ total of 10.
The result against Genoa leaves Juventus needing a response against Allegri’s Napoli, who arrive having scored more freely but also conceded more often this season.
