Former Egypt international Ahmed Dewidar has said Zamalek SC are worthy contenders for the Egyptian Premier League title, while warning the club could take formal action if they believe they are affected by refereeing errors in upcoming matches.
Speaking during an appearance on MBC Egypt, Dewidar argued that Zamalek’s performances this season merit recognition, even though the team has yet to secure silverware.
“Zamalek Club has not done anything yet and has not won the league title or the Confederation Cup.”
Title Debate Intensifies
Despite acknowledging that Zamalek have not clinched any trophies so far, Dewidar insisted that their displays throughout the campaign justify consideration as the most deserving side in the league.
He went further by suggesting that even supporters of their rivals would agree with that assessment.
“If you ask any Al-Ahly fan who understands well, they will say that Zamalek deserves the Egyptian League title this season.”
The remarks are likely to fuel ongoing debate among fans of both Zamalek and their long-standing rivals Al Ahly SC, particularly as the title race remains closely contested.
Financial and Administrative Challenges Highlighted
Dewidar also drew attention to internal challenges at Zamalek, referencing financial and administrative issues affecting the club. He pointed to salary figures and unresolved matters relating to player payments and registration.
“Moataz Gamal receives 150,000 pounds a month and there are problems with the players’ dues in addition to registration. What is the problem for an Al-Ahly supporter to acknowledge Zamalek’s right to win the league?”
His comments suggest that, despite off-field complications, Zamalek’s performances on the pitch should be judged independently.
Possible Escalation Over Refereeing Decisions
Looking ahead, Dewidar indicated that the club could adopt a more assertive stance if it believes refereeing decisions negatively impact results in the remaining fixtures.
“On my personal responsibility, Zamalek Club is seriously considering sending a delegation to the Football Association after any of the next five league matches in which refereeing errors occur.”
Such a move would represent a formal escalation, potentially increasing scrutiny on officiating standards during a critical phase of the season.
Focus on Upcoming Fixtures
Zamalek are also competing in continental football, with attention turning to their Confederation Cup campaign, including a forthcoming match against CR Belouizdad. However, the domestic title race remains a central priority.
With several matches still to play, the club’s ability to maintain consistency while managing external pressures could prove decisive.
Pressure Builds On and Off the Pitch
Dewidar’s comments underline the high stakes surrounding Zamalek’s season, both in terms of results and broader perceptions of fairness. As the campaign approaches its conclusion, attention will not only be on performances but also on how disputes—particularly those involving refereeing—are handled. Whether Zamalek can translate perceived merit into tangible success remains to be seen.
