Former Liverpool striker Danny Murphy believes Manchester City are the only team capable of preventing Arsenal from retaining the Premier League title.
Arsenal ended their long wait to win the Premier League when they secured the championship last season, and Mikel Arteta’s side will begin their title defence against newly promoted Coventry City on Friday evening as they search for their first three points of the campaign.
The Gunners are widely regarded as the favourites to win the league again. Their challenge will come from a familiar group of established contenders, including Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City, but Murphy has placed Arsenal ahead of all of them.
The former England international said Arsenal’s recent success, combined with their continuity under the same manager and with the same core group of players, gives them a significant advantage.
“It is always hard to call it now, especially when it feels like all the top teams have a lot of business to do before the transfer window shuts, but I can’t look past Arsenal as champions,” Murphy told BBC Sport.
“The main reasons being the momentum and confidence they will have from winning the Premier League already, but also the consistency of having the same manager and same players and just sprinkling even more quality on top.
“They have not lost any of their best players and they have got a group who know what the manager expects from them and are completely on board with it.”
Arsenal’s ability to retain their leading players has been central to Murphy’s prediction. He believes the familiarity within the squad, and its understanding of what the manager demands, could make the champions difficult to overhaul.
He also identified Manchester City’s attacking strength as the main reason they could remain Arsenal’s closest challengers.
“I look at the firepower Man City have got and, whoever the manager is and whoever they are playing against, they are still going to be able to score a lot of goals and win a lot of games.
“I would still have them as being Arsenal’s nearest rivals.”
Arsenal have strengthened their squad with four summer signings: Bruno Guimaraes, Piero Hincapie, Christos Tzolis and Illan Meslier. The club are also closing in on Ezri Konsa, a move which would add further quality to a team Murphy believes appears almost unbeatable on paper.
The Gunners’ first opportunity to justify their status as title favourites comes against Coventry City on Friday. They will be seeking to make an immediate start to their attempt to defend the Premier League crown, while the newly promoted visitors begin their campaign in the hope of taking points from the champions.
