Daniel Banjaqui: five possible routes for Benfica’s teenage full-back

At 18, Daniel Banjaqui has emerged as a player attracting attention from several major European clubs. The Portugal-born right-back, who came through the Benfica academy and is under contract with the Lisbon club until 2031, is being monitored as his future becomes a potential talking point in upcoming transfer windows.

Interest has reportedly come from England, Italy, Spain and Germany, although remaining at Benfica is also a realistic option for the Bissau-Guinean defender.

Premier League interest

Newcastle and Manchester United are following Banjaqui, according to journalist Ekrem Konur. Chelsea and Liverpool have also been linked with the teenager in recent reports.

A move to England would give Banjaqui the chance to test himself in one of Europe’s most demanding leagues and face some of the game’s leading attackers. However, competition for places at those clubs could make his adaptation difficult.

Any transfer would therefore need to offer more than the attraction of a high-profile destination. A clear sporting plan, realistic opportunities for first-team football and a defined route for development would be important factors.

Serie A provides a tactical challenge

Inter Milan and Juventus are reported to be interested in Banjaqui, while AS Roma have also been mentioned as a club watching his progress.

According to TuttoJuve, Juventus view him as a possible long-term target. Serie A could provide a valuable setting for the full-back to learn the tactical demands of Italian football, particularly in defensive situations.

At his age, Banjaqui could use such an environment to improve his positioning, reading of the game and consistency before taking on a more significant role.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid linked

The defender has also been associated with FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. LaLiga could suit a player expected to develop his technical ability and quality in possession, with build-up play an important part of the competition.

Barcelona may be attracted by Banjaqui’s potential, while Atletico Madrid could offer a demanding structure in which to strengthen his defensive qualities. Neither possibility, however, has been confirmed officially.

A move to Spain would make most sense if it allowed him to progress gradually rather than placing immediate pressure on him to become a regular.

Bundesliga opportunity

Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are also reported to be monitoring the Benfica player. A move to the Bundesliga could represent another step forward, provided the chosen club offers a development plan appropriate to his age.

The intensity of German football and its emphasis on quick transitions could help Banjaqui improve physically and become more effective when advancing from defence. Reported interest does not mean negotiations are under way, though, and finding the right environment would remain the priority.

Staying at Benfica

Banjaqui could instead continue his development in Portugal. His contract runs until 2031 and includes a reported release clause of 80 million euros, leaving Benfica in a strong negotiating position.

Remaining at the club would allow him to adjust further to senior football, gain experience and mature before considering a future move. Benfica may also prefer to retain him while his potential continues to develop.

For now, no destination is certain. Playing time, his progress and Benfica’s financial demands will all influence the decision. At 18, the quality of his next sporting project could prove as important as the fee involved.
