The meeting between Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroon on 3 October is expected to be far more competitive than a routine international friendly, with both sides seeking a positive result at the Stade Alassane Ouattara d’Ebimpe.
The fixture will bring the international break to a close for the Indomitable Lions, but the two teams arrive in contrasting circumstances.
Cote d’Ivoire have built momentum under Herve Renard, supported by two successive home victories and strong backing from their supporters. The 2023 African champions will be looking to maintain that form and confirm their status as one of the continent’s leading sides.
Cameroon, meanwhile, are attempting to respond after a disappointing performance against Congo in Brazzaville. David Pagou’s team are not expected to approach the match defensively, however, and will aim to return from Cote d’Ivoire with a positive result.
The teams were closely matched in their most recent meeting at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where they drew 1-1. Cameroon had not been widely expected to perform at that level on that occasion, and the result will provide encouragement before the latest encounter.
Cameroon set for changes
David Pagou is expected to make several alterations after the previous two matches, while retaining his usual 3-5-2 formation.
Simon Ngapandouetnbu is expected to replace Blondy Noukeu in goal. Che Malone could return to the centre of defence alongside experienced leader Samuel Kotto and Darlin Yongwa.
Mahamadou Nagida and Jackson Tchatchoua are reported to be in line to operate as the two wing-backs. In midfield, David Roy Nyengue is expected to join established players Arthur Avom and Danny Namaso.
The attack is likely to feature Bryan Mbeumo alongside Christian Kofane, who could return from injury.
The projected Cameroon line-up is: Simon Ngapandouetnbu; Che Malone, Samuel Kotto, Darlin Yongwa; Mahamadou Nagida, Jackson Tchatchoua; David Nyengue, Arthur Avom, Danny Namaso; Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Kofane.
A significant test before future fixtures
Dr Narcisse Tinkeu, a former physical trainer with Cameroon’s national teams at Under-17, Under-20, A’ and senior level, as well as the South Sudan national team, has also assessed the contest in an interview with Africafoot.
The match represents an important test for both nations ahead of their next competitive commitments. Although it is officially a friendly, the outcome could carry particular weight for Cameroon. A defeat for the Indomitable Lions could prompt further discussion about David Pagou’s future as head coach of the national team.
Kick-off is scheduled for 3 October at Ebimpe.
