City speak out after Semenyo and Guéhi targeted by racist

Manchester City have issued a strong condemnation after two of their players were subjected to racist abuse in separate incidents following a recent Premier League fixture.

The club released a statement on Tuesday denouncing the targeting of forward Antoine Semenyo during a match, while also highlighting online abuse directed at defender Marc Guéhi. Officials stressed that discrimination of any kind is unacceptable and reaffirmed their commitment to tackling racism within football.

The statement followed City’s 3-3 draw away at Everton, a result that could have implications for the Premier League title race, potentially benefiting rivals Arsenal.

Manchester City said they welcomed the rapid action taken by Everton and local authorities to identify the individual responsible for the abuse aimed at Semenyo during the match. The club described the response as encouraging but maintained that such incidents should not occur in the first place.

Attention was also drawn to racist messages posted on social media targeting Guéhi. City described these posts as “vile” and made clear their disappointment that players continue to face abuse off the pitch.

“Manchester City strongly condemns the racist abuse directed towards Antoine Semenyo,” the statement read. “We are incredibly disappointed to hear that Marc Guéhi was subject to a series of vile racist social media posts.”

The club reiterated its zero-tolerance stance, emphasising that racism has no place either in football or in wider society. It added that both players would receive the club’s full support following the incidents.

While the draw at Everton was a significant moment in the ongoing title race, the club’s focus has shifted to addressing the behaviour of individuals responsible for the abuse. Officials stressed that maintaining respect and inclusivity within the sport remains a priority.

Manchester City also underlined their ongoing commitment to working alongside football authorities and governing bodies to combat discrimination. The club said it would continue supporting efforts aimed at ensuring that the game remains welcoming to players, staff, and supporters from all backgrounds.

The statement concluded by reinforcing the club’s determination to challenge racism whenever it arises, both on and off the field, and to stand firmly with those affected.

The incidents add to a growing number of cases highlighting the persistence of racist abuse in football, despite repeated campaigns and initiatives aimed at eradicating it.
