Christopher Nkunku future at AC Milan uncertain as Newcastle United and RB Leipzig make approach

Newcastle United and RB Leipzig have made contact with AC Milan about a possible move for forward Christopher Nkunku, although discussions remain at an early stage.

The two clubs have initiated preliminary enquiries regarding the France international, with both understood to be prepared to compete for his signature. However, no formal offer has been made and the talks have not yet progressed beyond initial contact.

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the interest from Newcastle United and RB Leipzig is currently exploratory. Even so, the involvement of both clubs indicates that Nkunku could attract significant attention during the summer transfer window.

Nkunku’s position at AC Milan is also expected to influence the situation. The club’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, does not see the Frenchman as part of his plans, meaning the 24-year-old is likely to leave the Italian club this summer.

That decision has opened the possibility of Nkunku moving on after a spell at AC Milan. Newcastle United and RB Leipzig are now among the clubs to have shown an interest, although it remains unclear which side would be best placed to complete a deal if negotiations develop.

Nkunku’s current market value is estimated at 25m euros. That figure would represent a significant reduction on the fee involved in his previous high-profile transfer.

The forward came through the youth system at Paris Saint-Germain before establishing his reputation during his time with RB Leipzig. His performances for the German club brought him widespread recognition and made him one of the more sought-after attacking players in Europe.

Chelsea signed Nkunku from RB Leipzig for 80m euros in 2023. RB Leipzig could now have the opportunity to bring him back, potentially for considerably less than the amount it received when the player moved to Chelsea.

His career has therefore included spells with Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig, Chelsea and AC Milan, with the German club now appearing alongside Newcastle United as one of the early suitors for his next move.

At this stage, the available information points only to contact between the clubs rather than a completed agreement or advanced negotiations. Both Newcastle United and RB Leipzig are interested, but any transfer would still require talks with AC Milan and agreement on the terms of a deal.

Nkunku’s future is consequently expected to remain a subject of attention as the summer approaches. AC Milan’s willingness to allow him to leave, together with his estimated 25m-euro valuation, could encourage further approaches from the interested clubs. For now, however, the transfer remains at the preliminary-contact stage.
