Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns meet in the standout fixture of this weekend’s Betway Premiership programme, with the two South African heavyweights facing off at FNB Stadium at 15:00 on Saturday.
Amakhosi go into the match at the top of the log standings after making a winning start to the season. They opened their campaign with victories over Kruger United and Sekhukhune United, giving Fernando Da Cruz’s side confidence before their first major test.
Sundowns have also begun the new campaign with maximum points. The Brazilians secured a dramatic late victory against TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium during the week and will travel to Johannesburg aiming to maintain that momentum.
The availability of key players could have a significant bearing on the contest. Da Cruz is expected to have most of his regular squad available for Chiefs, while Sundowns boss Miguel Cardoso is likely to be without influential midfielder Teboho Mokoena.
Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel has started both of the club’s league matches so far, partnering Zitha Kwinika in central defence against Kruger United and Sekhukhune United.
The defender says representing one of the country’s biggest clubs should be regarded as an honour rather than a burden, despite the expectation that comes with playing for Amakhosi.
“Everyone talks about pressure at Chiefs,” he said.
“I always say to our young players that pressure is when you have to feed your family and you can’t do it because you don’t have work.
“Pressure is when you have someone on a hospital bed and there is nothing you can do about it. I felt pressure when my grandmother was in hospital in Portugal and I was in Angola, and I couldn’t do anything about it.
“Playing for such a big team like Chiefs is not pressure, but it is a privilege, and it comes with responsibility.”
The weekend’s action began on Friday, when Stellenbosch FC climbed into third place with a convincing 3-1 win against Marumo Gallants.
The match also produced a landmark moment for Quwan Plaatjies. The 20-year-old became the first player to score a hat-trick on his PSL debut, adding a notable individual achievement to Stellenbosch FC’s strong result.
Saturday’s other matches include AmaZulu against Siwelele FC at 15:00, followed by Sekhukhune United’s meeting with Polokwane City at 17:30.
Durban City will face Richards Bay at 20:00, while Milford FC host Kruger United at the same time.
On Sunday, Chippa United play Pirates at 15:00 before TS Galaxy take on Arrows at 17:30.
