Chiedozie Ogbene joins Lincoln City as Irish-Nigerian winger leaves Ipswich on loan

Irish-Nigerian winger Chiedozie Ogbene has joined Lincoln City from Ipswich Town on loan, adding a 29-year-old right-sided attacker to the Championship club’s squad.

Ogbene’s move was completed on 1 September 2026 after he returned to Ipswich at the end of a loan spell with Sheffield United. He spent the 2025-26 season with Sheffield United before rejoining Ipswich on 31 May, and has now moved on again for a temporary spell at Lincoln.

The winger originally joined Ipswich from Luton Town in August 2024 in a €9.5m transfer. He had spent the previous campaign with Luton after leaving Rotherham United on a free transfer in July 2023.

Ogbene began his senior career in Ireland with Cork City and Limerick before moving to England. His early English career included loan spells with Exeter City and a permanent move to Rotherham in 2019. He also played for Brentford after joining from Limerick in January 2018.

Born in Lagos, Ogbene holds Irish and Nigerian nationality and plays primarily on the right wing. He is a right-footed player and stands 1.81m tall. His arrival gives Lincoln an experienced attacking option with a career that has included time in the Premier League and Championship.

Ogbene was named Ireland’s Footballer of the Year in 2023. He has also won the Football League Trophy with Rotherham United in the 2021-22 season and the Irish Cup with Cork City in 2015-16.

The move takes him to Lincoln after Ipswich’s latest spell in the Premier League, while Lincoln begin the 2026-27 campaign in the Championship. Ogbene’s current market value is listed at €4m, although no transfer fee has been attached to the loan.

His previous transfer to Ipswich followed a season at Luton, where he had arrived as a free agent from Rotherham. That move came after his five-year association with Rotherham, during which he also helped the club win the Football League Trophy.

Ogbene’s loan with Lincoln City is scheduled to run until 1 January 2027.
