Chelsea value Pedro Neto at £100m as questions remain over his role

Chelsea value Pedro Neto at about £100m, according to The Athletic, despite doubts over whether the winger’s performances and likely position justify such a fee.

The figure would represent almost twice the £51.4m Chelsea paid Wolves for Neto in August 2024. It is also part of a wider rise in transfer valuations for elite wide players during the closing stages of a busy summer window.

In this week’s Transfer DealSheet, Chelsea reaffirmed their valuation of Neto, while also placing Enzo at no less than £120m. The club are not actively trying to sell either player, which has contributed to the high asking prices.

Chelsea’s assessment reflects the sums being discussed elsewhere. Real Madrid have committed to paying €125m, with a possible further €15m in add-ons, for RB Leipzig winger Jan Diomande. Paris Saint-Germain value Barcola significantly higher than the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliott Anderson.

The market for leading young players has clearly accelerated. However, there remains debate over whether Neto belongs in the same price bracket as Diomande and Barcola.

When Chelsea recruited Neto, they regarded him as a high-level winger who could operate on either flank and, when required, as a false nine. Enzo Maresca used him in all three positions during his time in charge, and Neto produced several important moments at Stamford Bridge.

He scored a powerful equaliser against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in November 2024, a result which ultimately disrupted Arsenal’s pursuit of the 2024-25 Premier League title. In April of the same year, Neto struck a stoppage-time winner against Fulham at Craven Cottage to revive Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League qualification. He also scored three goals during Chelsea’s successful Club World Cup campaign.

Across all competitions last season, Neto recorded 10 goals and 10 assists. His Premier League return was five goals and six assists from 34 appearances. He has made 102 appearances for Chelsea over the past two seasons, easing some of the injury concerns that followed him from Wolves.

Yet the statistics do not clearly place Neto among Europe’s outstanding wingers. His dribbling figures, both for volume and success rate, are well below Diomande’s. Although Barcola is used more as an inverted forward at Paris Saint-Germain, he creates considerably more goal threat.

Compared with wingers in Europe’s five major leagues, Neto’s dribbling numbers are broadly average, whether he is playing on the left or in the right-wing role most commonly assigned to him at Chelsea.

That helps explain the frustration sometimes heard at Stamford Bridge. Supporters can become restless when Neto faces a deep defence but does not carry the ball forward, or when he repeatedly uses feints and stepovers between his feet before attempting to cross or shoot.

Crossing is an area in which Neto stands out. He averages 6.4 crosses per game, compared with 1.6 for Diomande and 1.3 for Barcola. Those figures are influenced by their differing tactical responsibilities and styles, but Neto has consistently offered Chelsea a dangerous delivery from the right, particularly with inswinging crosses. In a 3-0 pre-season win over Milan earlier this month, Joao Pedro converted one such ball with ease.

Neto’s overall statistical profile suits a possession-based team. Most of his progression figures are well above average and his link-up play is effective. However, his impact in the final third, both with and without the ball, remains an area for improvement.

Age is another factor in Chelsea’s valuation. The club know that teams are paying substantial premiums for players believed to possess exceptional potential. At 19, Diomande and at 23, Barcola may be viewed as possible future Ballon d’Or contenders. Neto is now 26 and is more likely to be considered close to his peak.

Chelsea’s changing options could also affect his importance. Estevao is preparing for his second full season in England and there is strong confidence at Stamford Bridge that he will develop into a key starter. Giovani Kwanda has joined and will compete for time on both wings. Morgan Rogers, signed for £117m, or about $160m, is available on the left, while Gittens has returned from injury.

Alonso also began moving away from a traditional winger system during pre-season, switching from a 4-2-3-1 to a variation of 3-4-2-1, the formation he used successfully at Leverkusen. Such a change could disadvantage attackers whose best work comes in wide positions.

Pre-season suggested Neto could be behind Joao Pedro, Palmer, Rogers and Estevao in the race for central attacking roles. If Enzo remains, he may also be ahead of Neto. A reduced role could cause Neto’s market value to fall by next summer.

There is, however, another possibility. During Chelsea’s tour of Australia and Asia, Alonso appeared to favour Neto as an attacking right wing-back, with summer signing Palomino operating on the left.

The experiment produced encouraging results, although the matches were played at a much lower intensity than Premier League fixtures. Neto remains untested defensively, but he has shown a willingness to track back and his crossing remains a weapon. Whether he would accept a permanent change of position is unclear, but Chelsea’s conversion of Victor Moses into a wing-back during the 2016-17 season offers a positive precedent.

Neto is attracting interest, but it is not yet known whether another club will meet Chelsea’s £100m valuation. Ultimately, a player’s true worth is determined by what another club is prepared to pay.

If Neto stays at Stamford Bridge, he can help Alonso, although he may not become a decisive figure in the team.
