Chelsea sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton

Chelsea have completed the signing of England and Ghana forward Danny Welbeck from Brighton, with the experienced striker agreeing a contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 30 June 2028.

Welbeck, 35, joins Chelsea after six years with Brighton, having completed his move on 1 August 2026. The Manchester-born centre-forward, who prefers his right foot, arrived at Brighton from Watford on a free transfer in October 2020.

His move to Chelsea adds another experienced attacking option to the club’s squad, with Welbeck having spent much of his career playing at the highest level of English football.

The striker has made 400 Premier League appearances during his career, scoring 90 goals and registering 38 assists.

Welbeck’s top-flight career has taken him to several of England’s leading clubs. He began at Manchester United after coming through their youth system before later playing for Sunderland, Arsenal, Watford and Brighton.

His time at Manchester United brought a number of major honours. Welbeck won two Premier League titles, two League Cups and three English Super Cups with the club.

He was also part of the United side that won the Champions League in 2008 and the Club World Cup in 2009.

Welbeck left Manchester United for Arsenal in 2014 in a deal worth £20m. During his spell with the London club, he won the FA Cup in 2015 and 2017.

He also helped Arsenal reach the Europa League final in 2019, adding another significant European campaign to his career.

His record in European competition includes 24 Champions League appearances, in which he scored seven goals. He has also played 21 times in the Europa League and scored six goals.

Welbeck has continued to contribute in domestic cup competitions throughout his career.

He has scored 11 goals in 38 FA Cup appearances and has found the net seven times in 31 EFL Cup matches.

The forward has also experienced football outside the Premier League. He made eight appearances in the Championship and scored twice in the competition.

His arrival at Chelsea represents another stage in a career that began in Manchester United’s academy and has since taken him through some of English football’s most prominent clubs.

Welbeck’s experience at Premier League level is likely to be one of the key features of his addition to Chelsea’s squad. His 400 appearances in the competition have produced 90 goals and 38 assists, while his European and domestic cup experience includes several major honours.

His career has also included international football, with the striker described as an England and Ghana forward in the announcement of his move.

After six seasons at Brighton, Welbeck now begins a new chapter with Chelsea.

The 35-year-old is contracted to the Premier League club until the end of June 2028, meaning his immediate future will be in west London as Chelsea add one of the more experienced attacking players in English football to their squad.
