Chelsea have completed the signing of Argentina international Valentin Barco from Strasbourg, with only the official announcement now outstanding, according to leading transfer insider Fabrizio Romano and French outlet Foot Mercato.
The 21-year-old, who was part of Argentina’s squad at the 2026 World Cup, is set to become the latest player to move from Strasbourg to Stamford Bridge under the clubs’ shared ownership structure.
Romano reported on X that the transfer “has been completed”, adding that the announcement is expected shortly. He said all documents for Barco’s move to Chelsea have been signed, with a verbal agreement originally reached as far back as May.
The move will see Chelsea add another versatile, attack-minded left-sided player to their squad, with Barco capable of operating both in midfield and at left-back.
World Cup frustration for Barco
Barco’s transfer comes on the back of a frustrating World Cup for the young Argentine.
The 2026 tournament concluded with Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final to claim their second world title. Despite being called up to the national team, Barco was largely a spectator during the competition.
The Strasbourg player, valued for his ability to cover multiple positions, spent most of the World Cup on the bench. He featured for just 19 minutes, coming on as a substitute in Argentina’s 3-1 victory over Jordan in their third group-stage match.
His limited World Cup involvement contrasts sharply with his club form last season in Ligue 1, where he delivered a standout campaign.
Standout season in France
Barco enjoyed a highly productive season with Strasbourg, registering three goals and nine assists in 43 appearances in all competitions.
His performances in France’s top flight attracted interest across Europe, but he will not be returning to Ligue 1 next season. Instead, he is poised to join Chelsea as part of the Premier League club’s ongoing strategy of recruiting young, multi-functional talents.
The Argentina international’s ability to contribute both defensively and offensively from wide and central areas has been a key factor in Chelsea’s pursuit.
Another Chelsea signing from Strasbourg
Foot Mercato reports that Barco will become the fifth Strasbourg player to move to Chelsea since the French club came under the control of BlueCo, the ownership group that also runs the London side.
Chelsea have already taken Mike Bentous, Aaron Anselmino and David Datro Fofana on loan from Strasbourg, as well as striker Emanuel Emegha. Barco’s permanent move underlines the growing pipeline between the two clubs.
The transfer further illustrates Chelsea’s use of their multi-club model to identify, develop and integrate emerging talent across Europe.
Alonso to be handed new option
With the deal now effectively done, Barco is expected to be available to new Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso for the upcoming season.
The Spanish manager, appointed to lead Chelsea into the new campaign, will be able to call upon Barco as an additional option on the left flank and in midfield.
“As a result, Xabi Alonso will be able to rely on another new signing in the new season,” Foot Mercato reported, highlighting the club’s intent to refresh and deepen the squad.
Chelsea are yet to confirm the length of Barco’s contract or the financial details of the transfer, but the move aligns with their broader recruitment policy of investing heavily in young players with high potential and resale value.
