Chelsea remain interested in signing Rayan Cherki and could revive their pursuit of the Manchester City attacking midfielder if the club is hit by sanctions.
Journalist Ekrem Konur reports that Chelsea have long admired the France international, who is of Algerian descent. The London club had already explored a deal for Cherki before he moved to Manchester City.
Chelsea are understood to have considered a transfer involving Andrey Santos and Olympique Lyonnais, but those discussions failed to produce an agreement. Manchester City subsequently secured the services of the attacking midfielder.
Strong competition for Cherki
Chelsea’s interest could be renewed if sanctions against Manchester City materialise, with the club then expected to examine the possibility of bringing Cherki to Stamford Bridge.
However, they would face significant competition. Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are also reported to be monitoring the 23-year-old’s situation.
Cherki is highly regarded by leading European clubs because of his creativity, technical ability and capacity to operate between the lines. Those qualities have maintained his strong reputation despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.
No concrete approach from Chelsea has been announced at this stage, and Cherki remains under contract with Manchester City until 30 June 2030. His current market value is estimated at 90 million euros.
Any move would depend largely on developments involving Manchester City. If the sanctions being discussed are confirmed, the situation could change quickly and prompt Chelsea to make another attempt for Cherki.
