Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Italian international Honest Ahanor from Serie A club Atalanta, with the 18-year-old defender set to officially join the club in 2027.
The agreement means Chelsea have secured a future transfer for Ahanor, who will remain linked with Atalanta until the move formally takes place. The defender’s arrival will come after a breakthrough season in Italian football, during which he established himself at club level and earned recognition from the national team.
Ahanor made 35 appearances for Atalanta last campaign, his first season in Bergamo after joining the club from Genoa in July 2025. His form during that campaign helped him progress to the senior Italy squad, where he made his first two appearances in June.
The move to Chelsea follows a rapid rise for Ahanor since his transfer from Genoa. After arriving at Atalanta in July 2025, he featured regularly enough to complete 35 appearances during his first campaign in Bergamo. His performances also brought him into contention for Italy, culminating in his first two senior international appearances in June.
Chelsea’s agreement with Atalanta therefore covers a player who has already made an impact at both club and international level, despite being only 18. However, the defender’s official move to Chelsea is scheduled for 2027 rather than immediately.
Ahanor is recognised as an Italian international following his two senior appearances for Italy. His performances for Atalanta last campaign were the key factor behind that progression, having followed his move from Genoa in July 2025.
The transfer will add a future defensive option to Chelsea’s squad, although Ahanor will not officially become a Chelsea player until 2027. Until then, Atalanta remain the club for whom he made 35 appearances during his first season in Bergamo.
Chelsea have now reached an agreement for the defender, while Atalanta will retain him before the scheduled completion of the move. For Ahanor, the deal represents the next stage of a swift development that has taken him from Genoa to Atalanta and then into the Italian senior national team.
