Celtic have completed the signing of Egypt winger Haissem Hassan from Real Oviedo in a deal that could eventually be worth £9m.
The 24-year-old has agreed a four-year contract with the Scottish club, who also have the option to extend the arrangement by another 12 months. Hassan completed his medical in London before signing the necessary paperwork.
Celtic will pay Real Oviedo an initial fee of about £6m, while a further £3m is available through add-ons. A substantial portion of those bonus payments will become payable if Celtic qualify for the league phase of the Champions League later this month.
The transfer has been completed with Celtic’s European campaign in mind. Hassan could still be registered in time to join the squad for next week’s Champions League play-off against LASK Linz.
The deadline for Celtic to register players for that tie is Thursday, although the club will have the chance to add two further players before Tuesday.
Hassan had been a long-standing target for Celtic, who were looking to strengthen their options with a left-footed winger capable of operating on the right side. His arrival follows a season in which he made 38 appearances for Real Oviedo, supplying three assists from his favoured position on the right wing.
He also impressed at this summer’s World Cup, helping to increase interest in his services before Celtic secured his signature.
The deal makes Hassan Celtic’s third signing of the summer. He follows the arrival of strikers Camilo Duran and Kasper Hogh as the club continue to build their squad for domestic competition and their Champions League qualification campaign.
Celtic’s agreement with Real Oviedo is structured around an initial payment and performance-related clauses, with the final value dependent in part on the club’s progress in Europe. If the Scottish champions reach the Champions League league phase, the transfer fee could rise to £9m.
Hassan now has the opportunity to become involved quickly, with Celtic’s play-off against LASK Linz approaching and the registration window still open. His eligibility for the tie will depend on whether the required paperwork is completed before Thursday’s deadline.
