Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has praised striker Kelechi Iheanacho after his decisive contribution helped secure a place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals with a commanding victory over St Mirren.
The forward came off the bench to score twice during extra time, as Celtic sealed a 6-2 win in a dramatic encounter on Sunday.
Iheanacho’s impact proved pivotal in a match that had remained closely contested before the additional period. His first goal came via a near-post header from a cross delivered by James Forrest, giving Celtic renewed momentum. He then followed it up with a composed left-footed finish from inside the penalty area, effectively putting the result beyond doubt.
Speaking after the match, O’Neill highlighted the importance of Iheanacho’s performance and his influence on the outcome.
“It was a tough afternoon, but there were some great goals, Kelechi Iheanacho coming on and doing brilliantly,” O’Neill was quoted by Celtic TV.
The manager also pointed to the striker’s qualities and the challenges he has faced this season, particularly with injuries that have limited his playing time.
“Everyone in the dressing-room knows that he has been a really good player,” O’Neill added.
“He’s had a few injuries and he’s been trying to get that fitness, but a properly fit Iheanacho is definitely a handful as he’s proved today.”
The Nigerian international’s return to form could provide a timely boost for Celtic as they continue their push in domestic competitions. His performance off the bench not only demonstrated his attacking ability but also underlined his importance as an option in crucial moments.
Sunday’s victory sees Celtic progress confidently into the semi-finals, having delivered an attacking display that overwhelmed their opponents in the latter stages. While the match had presented challenges earlier on, the team’s resilience and depth ultimately proved decisive.
For Iheanacho, the goals mark a continuation of his contribution this season, taking his tally to six across all competitions. Despite limited opportunities due to fitness setbacks, his latest display may strengthen his case for a more prominent role in the squad moving forward.
Celtic will now look ahead to the next stage of the competition with renewed confidence, buoyed by both the result and the resurgence of one of their key attacking players.
