Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has defended winger Amad Diallo following the youngster’s mistake during the Premier League meeting with Liverpool FC.
Speaking after the match, Carrick insisted the 23-year-old was unaffected by the incident and remained in positive spirits despite the scrutiny that followed the game.
“Amad’s fine. He’s absolutely fine. There’s no problem,” Carrick said after the encounter.
The Manchester United manager stressed that errors are a natural part of football and said players should not be judged solely on one moment in a match. Carrick drew on his own experience as a former professional footballer, admitting he had also made mistakes during his playing career.
“Amad’s fine. He’s absolutely fine. There’s no problem. He was smiling full-time [against Liverpool]. Mistakes are part of football. I’ve made them. I’ve made plenty as a player, I understand, and sometimes you make them and it leads to a goal.”
Carrick was keen to highlight the broader contribution made by the Ivorian winger since returning to the side. According to the United boss, Amad has played an important role both with and without the ball, particularly through his pressing, work rate and intensity.
The manager said it would be unfair to overlook the winger’s recent performances because of a single mistake against Liverpool. He argued that the player has consistently contributed to the team and continues to show positive qualities in training and matches.
Carrick also praised Amad’s character and attitude, describing him as “a joy to coach.” The United manager suggested the winger’s mentality and ability give him strong prospects for the future.
“He has no reason to be down or frustrated. There are so many positives ahead of him,” Carrick added.
The manager expressed confidence that the young winger is already focused on Manchester United’s next fixture on Saturday and has moved on quickly from the disappointment of the Liverpool match.
Carrick’s comments appeared intended to ease pressure on the player following criticism after the Premier League encounter. By publicly backing the winger, the United manager signalled his belief that young players should be supported as they continue their development.
Amad, who has been regarded as one of the club’s promising attacking talents, has earned praise in recent months for his energy and attacking threat. Carrick suggested those qualities remain more significant than a single error in a high-profile match.
The United boss also underlined the importance of perspective when assessing younger players, especially in demanding fixtures against major rivals such as Liverpool. He maintained that mistakes can happen at any level of the game and should not overshadow a player’s overall contribution.
Carrick’s strong defence of the winger reflects his confidence in Amad’s long-term future at the club, with the manager convinced the player still has significant potential to fulfil in the years ahead.
