Cape Verde captain Ryan Mendes is in advanced negotiations with Moroccan club RS Berkane over a possible move, according to the latest reports.
The 36-year-old forward is a free agent and has reportedly been offered a one-year contract, with the option of extending the deal for a further season.
A move would see Mendes reunite with Bubista, his former Cape Verde manager, who was recently appointed head coach of RS Berkane on a contract running until 2028.
The potential reunion would bring together two figures who played important roles in Cape Verde’s recent rise. Bubista knows Mendes’ qualities and leadership well, having worked with the veteran during the national team’s historic qualification for and participation in the 2026 World Cup.
Mendes has been an international since 2010 and, long before Cape Verde’s recent breakthrough on the global stage, had become one of the most recognisable representatives of the country’s football.
The forward has won more than 100 caps for Cape Verde and played a leading role during the nation’s World Cup campaign. He started every match for the Blue Sharks and provided an assist in their last-16 tie against Argentina.
Although Mendes no longer possesses the pace that made him such a threat earlier in his career, he continues to offer a valuable blend of technique, vision and experience.
He also comes off a successful season in the Turkish second division, strengthening the case for RS Berkane to pursue a deal despite his age.
For the Moroccan club, the possible arrival of Mendes would represent another experienced addition ahead of a particularly significant campaign. RS Berkane finished as runners-up in Morocco last season and are aiming to reclaim the domestic title.
The club also wants to make further progress in continental competition after reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League. Mendes’ international experience and leadership could therefore be viewed as important assets as RS Berkane seek success on both domestic and continental fronts.
The negotiations remain ongoing, with the reported proposal covering one season and including the possibility of an additional year. Mendes’ status as a free agent means the move could be completed without a transfer fee if an agreement is reached.
His arrival would also continue RS Berkane’s recent interest in Cape Verdean football. The club brought in Bubista only a few weeks ago, following the manager’s role in guiding the Blue Sharks through their historic World Cup journey.
For Mendes, a move to Morocco would offer the chance to work again with a coach who understands his character and influence, while RS Berkane would gain a player whose experience has been built over more than a decade at international level.
