Cameroon midfielder André-Frank Zambo Anguissa scored his first goal in almost a year as Napoli were held to a thrilling 3-3 draw by AS Roma in the Italian league.
The 30-year-old opened the scoring with an acrobatic volley at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Saturday, 24 October 2026, marking a welcome return to the scoresheet after a lengthy spell without a goal that was compounded by injuries.
Anguissa had last scored on 28 October 2025, when he netted the only goal in Napoli’s 1-0 away victory against Lecce. Nearly 12 months later, the Cameroon international found the net again with a spectacular finish against Roma.
The midfielder broke the deadlock in the 28th minute after Roma failed to deal with a free kick taken by Napoli winger Matteo Politano.
The loose ball fell into Anguissa’s path, and he responded with a bicycle kick that beat goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.
His strike gave Napoli the lead in an entertaining contest and offered an encouraging sign following the injury problems that had disrupted his progress in recent months.
Napoli carried their advantage into the second half and strengthened their position through Scotland international Scott McTominay, who scored in the 48th minute before adding his second in the 83rd minute.
However, Roma mounted a determined response to deny the hosts victory.
Matías Soulé reduced the deficit in the 69th minute, giving the visitors renewed hope of getting back into the game.
Leonardo Balerdi then scored twice, finding the net in the 74th and 89th minutes to complete Roma’s comeback and secure a share of the points.
Despite Anguissa’s impressive opening goal and McTominay’s double, Napoli were unable to hold on for the win as Roma fought back in a match that produced six goals.
For Anguissa, the goal was a significant personal milestone after a difficult period affected by injuries. His previous strike against Lecce had come almost a year earlier, making the finish against Roma his first goal since that encounter.
The Cameroonian’s return to scoring form will offer encouragement to Napoli, particularly after the interruptions he has experienced through injury.
His ability to contribute in attack was evident in the quality of the finish that put his side ahead.
The goal also came in a high-scoring match in which Napoli appeared to have done enough to claim victory after McTominay extended their lead in the second half.
Roma, however, continued to press and took advantage of their opportunities to rescue a draw late in the game.
Anguissa’s effort was one of the standout moments of the encounter, but the result ultimately left Napoli and Roma sharing the points after an eventful league meeting.
While Napoli were denied victory, the Cameroon international’s return to the scoresheet represents a positive development as he looks to regain momentum following his injury-hit spell.
The 3-3 result was shaped by Napoli’s early control and Roma’s late fightback, with Anguissa’s spectacular volley providing the opening goal in a contest that neither side managed to win.
